Winning Strategies for Mahjong Solitaire

Some layouts in Mahjong Solitaire are winnable; others can deadlock no matter what you do. Your goal is to make choices that keep the board solvable. These strategies build on our strategy tips and how to play guide. They work with any layout that uses standard Mahjong Solitaire rules.

Watch for Unique Tiles

Some tile types appear in only two copies on the board. If one copy is blocked by the other, you must remove the blocking tile first. Before matching a pair, ask: "Is there another copy of this tile still under the stack?" If yes, removing the free pair might block that third copy forever. Prefer matching pairs that do not trap unique tiles. This ties into tile matching logic and mental focus.

Clear Tall Stacks First

The more tiles you expose, the more options you have. Prioritize removing tiles that sit on top of deep stacks. If you have a choice between matching two tiles that open nothing and two that open several tiles, choose the latter. This keeps the board flexible and reduces the chance of a deadlock. When to Reshuffle

If no free matching pair remains, the game is stuck. Many implementations offer a reshuffle: the board is rebuilt (often with the same or a new layout) and you try again. Using it is not cheating; it is part of the design. After a reshuffle, apply the same strategies—unique tiles, stack priority—and you may clear the board. The game is meant to be relaxing and beneficial; reshuffle when it helps you enjoy it.
